JUTE

Twisted Engineering has partnered with MocoJute, owned and operated by Baltimore’s Moco and Beemo, to get our hands on some of the best hand-laid raw jute bondage rope in the world.

Incrementally, each hank is pulled repeatedly through a carabiner and around itself, to help soften the yarns and condition the rope. While this process does soften the rope a great deal, it also raises many loose fibers to the surface, which can make the jute feel even more scratchy than normal. To remedy this, each hank is quickly pulled through an open flame, continuously rotating as it moves, removing the maximum amount of stray fibers. Lastly, each hank is friction polished to remove any hard spots which may have formed as a result of singed fibers.

Once fully conditioned, each hank is then treated with Twisted Engineering’s Rope Oil – an all-natural vegan-friendly jojoba oil – which penetrates deep into the rope, adding good moisture to lubricate the fibers, allowing them to bend rather than break. At this point, each hank is hung loosely and allowed to “dry” for 48 hours, at which the process is repeated if needed.

While our oil-treated jute moves directly to the finishing stage at this point, our wax-treated jute is further treated with a light coat of Twisted Engineering’s Rope Wax – an all-natural beegan-friendly mix of beeswax and jojoba oil – before it is baked to form a wear-resistant barrier which encapsulates the rope, helping to keep the good moisture in and the bad moisture out. From here, our wax-treated jute also moves to the finishing stage; where, like our oil-treated jute, it is hand-finished with our signature thistle knots.

It is important to note that while Twisted Engineering’s Rope Readying Policy requires the entire length of each hank to be inspected by the rope handler upon completion of each phase; Jedi further inspects each rope personally, both before it begins being processing, as well as after the finish has been completed. While this comprehensive inspection process is intended to ensure the overall safety of our products, it in no way absolves each rigger of their personal responsibilities regarding their own rope.
